Yesterday morning I saw something I’ve never seen before: a half dozen goldfinches on the ground, nosing around among some dandelions. They looked very pretty in their full mating colors next to the dandelions; but I don’t understand what they were doing. Anyone out there know what they were up to?

Goldfinch fashion week. They were looking for accessories. Of course!

For the past week I have had many Goldfinches coming to my feeder. Are they migrating? The bird book says that many Goldfinches are year round residents in Mass; and also says that they breed and nest later than this. So – are they starting courtship or are some migrants passing through now? I don’t know, and would like to know.
I defer to the birding experts for the answer.
