Chipmunks and chickadees

The cats and I observed the weirdest thing this morning:  a chipmunk was sitting happily on one of the semi-rotted fence posts by our living room, just minding his own business, cleaning his face, being generally chipmunk-mellow.

And then the chickadee came along.  This chickadee was enraged by the chipmunk’s presence, and kept dive-bombing the chipmunk, going directly for the head each time.

Finally the chipmunk had enough and ran away.  And the chickadee disappeared, too.  Weird.

  1. It’s funny, I’d always thought of birds as pretty docile, harmless creatures, but when we lived in Plymouth, there was a very active gang of sparrows that would dive bomb our old cat Yako whenever she was walking across the yard. And the blue jays totally took over the porch where the cats’ feeding bowls were during the summer. Since we’ve lived in Maine, I’ve seen birds gang up on our other cats, one of our dogs, and squirrels, too. They have nothing to worry about from my sorry brood of pets who have no more killer instinct in them than I do!

  2. Oh, my little chickadee!!! Who can forget my mom’s cat Sam’s frantic need to avoid daylight to avoid being attacked by Swallows – good times.

  3. Birds are evil. The ones in my new neighborhood eat mulberries and then sit in the trees above my car all night and poop icky mulberry stained poop on my car.

  4. Jean ~ Ick. Good thing that your car isn’t white…
Liz & Jim ~ But…but…but… I LOVE chickadees! They aren’t supposed to be evil like sparrows and swallows and blue jays!!
