{"id":798,"date":"2010-11-14T17:04:20","date_gmt":"2010-11-14T21:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=798"},"modified":"2010-11-14T17:04:20","modified_gmt":"2010-11-14T21:04:20","slug":"alcatraz-versus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/alcatraz-versus\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcatraz versus&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 5th and 6th grade book groups are both reading the same book this month, <em>Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians <\/em>by Brandon Sanderson.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been wanting to read this book, first in a series of four (so far), partly because of its title, and partly because several of the library&#8217;s most avid readers have recommended the series to me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But &#8211; I&#8217;m sorry, very sorry to be this blunt &#8211; I hate the book.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all a little too cute, too self-conscious, too <em>adult <\/em>&#8211; it&#8217;s impossible to get lost in the story, because the narrator keeps butting in with comments about the book or himself.\u00a0 And the narrator, Alcatraz, is supposed to be a thirteen year old boy, but his rants and complaints sound more like a forty year old cranky grownup.\u00a0 For instance, when his new-found grandfather pulls into a gas station, Alcatraz observes:\u00a0 &#8220;I didn&#8217;t recognize the brand &#8211; the sign hanging above the ridiculously high prices simply depicted the image of an upside-down teddy bear&#8221; (p. 37).\u00a0 How many thirteen year olds are going to notice, let alone comment on, the price of gas?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read several of the reviews that were written about the book when it was published in 2007, and I think that the <em>Horn Book Magazine <\/em>says it best in this phrase from its review:\u00a0 &#8220;For all its self-aware preciosity&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 Obviously there&#8217;s an end to that sentence, an end that doesn&#8217;t agree with me, since the <em>Horn Book <\/em>recommends this book, but &#8220;self-aware preciosity&#8221; sums up my criticism of this novel.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that Alcatraz and his creator would dismiss me as an &#8220;evil librarian,&#8221; but I just can&#8217;t find much to like in the book.<\/p>\n<p>So now it will be doubly interesting to hear what the 5th and 6th graders have to say about it when they meet this week and next week, respectively.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to keep my opinions to myself at first, so that the kids get a chance to say what they really think.\u00a0 If all of the kids really like the book, maybe I won&#8217;t even mention my thoughts at all.\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 Stay tuned to hear how these two book discussions go&#8230;and now I&#8217;ve got to get back to finishing the book.\u00a0 Sigh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 5th and 6th grade book groups are both reading the same book this month, Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been wanting to read this book, first in a series of four (so far), partly because of its title, and partly because several of the library&#8217;s most avid readers have recommended &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/alcatraz-versus\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Alcatraz versus&#8230;<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-798","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-groups","category-childrens-book-reviews"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/798","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=798"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/798\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":799,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/798\/revisions\/799"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=798"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=798"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=798"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
