{"id":581,"date":"2009-09-30T22:12:25","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T02:12:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=581"},"modified":"2010-12-10T19:48:11","modified_gmt":"2010-12-10T23:48:11","slug":"surreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/surreal\/","title":{"rendered":"surreal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday morning I had a moment in the midst of storytime.\u00a0 We were doing a\u00a0lap bounce\u00a0(&#8220;The Grand Old Duke of York&#8221;) and somehow I went on autopilot while leading the group and took in the scene as if I were an outsider.\u00a0 A semicircle of adults around the room, singing\u00a0while bouncing and lifting their children in unison, following <em>my <\/em>lead and my rhythm as I demonstrated the lap bounce with Pepper the border collie puppet in my own lap.\u00a0 How frickin&#8217; surreal.\u00a0 I mean, seriously.\u00a0 Five years ago I would have laughed if you had told me I&#8217;d be leading a large group in song while bouncing a dog puppet in my lap.\u00a0 And here were all these sincere faces following along with me.\u00a0 Not a single person on the verge of laughing.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 Part of me wants to videotape myself leading one of these storytimes, just to see what it&#8217;s all about, really; but I know that any confidence I currently have would be totally shattered by watching a video of myself.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ll leave\u00a0my observations of myself to the odd surreal out-of-body moments like yesterday&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>And then, fast forward to this evening, at my first meditation class: we had just finished a walking meditation around the room, and had eased back to our chairs.\u00a0 &#8220;Stand in front of your chair,&#8221; said our instructor, &#8220;but don&#8217;t sit down yet.&#8221;\u00a0 Which is\u00a0what I say as a lead-in to &#8220;Handy Spandy&#8221; in the infant storytime.\u00a0 It was all I could do to hold back from launching into the rhyme: &#8220;Handy Spandy, sugary candy, we all jump IN.\u00a0 Handy Spandy, sugary candy, we all jump OUT.\u00a0 Handy Spandy sugary candy, we all jump UP.\u00a0 Handy Spandy, sugary candy, we all sit down.&#8221;\u00a0 Thankfully, I was able to restrain myself, but how odd that my first reaction in that situation was to want to take charge and lead a sit-down action rhyme.<\/p>\n<p>***************<\/p>\n<p>[For those of you who might be wondering, I LOVE my meditation class.\u00a0 LOVE IT.\u00a0 A great bunch of people (we shared a huge laugh together, which is the best kind of bonding experience), and, most importantly, meditation actually seems to work for me.\u00a0 Yay.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday morning I had a moment in the midst of storytime.\u00a0 We were doing a\u00a0lap bounce\u00a0(&#8220;The Grand Old Duke of York&#8221;) and somehow I went on autopilot while leading the group and took in the scene as if I were an outsider.\u00a0 A semicircle of adults around the room, singing\u00a0while bouncing and lifting their children &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/surreal\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">surreal<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11,23],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-librarianship","category-storytime"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/581","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=581"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/581\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":892,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/581\/revisions\/892"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=581"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=581"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=581"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
