{"id":77,"date":"2007-09-01T09:33:28","date_gmt":"2007-09-01T13:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=77"},"modified":"2007-09-01T09:36:15","modified_gmt":"2007-09-01T13:36:15","slug":"77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/77\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From my conversations with kids this week:<\/p>\n<p>A little boy, about seven, came up to me and said, with no preamble:\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Why don&#8217;t they have robots fight wars?\u00c2\u00a0 If robots did the shooting, then no people would die.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From the same child, later in the same conversation, after he had explained to me how wars were fought by the Empire&#8217;s droids in Star Wars:\u00c2\u00a0 &gt;sigh&lt;\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;People today just don&#8217;t get it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From a newly minted sixth grader, about moving up to the middle school:\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s ok, I guess.\u00c2\u00a0 You have a lot more freedom, and no one&#8217;s standing around watching you all the time.\u00c2\u00a0 But I miss recess.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From a seventh grader, who spent Thursday afternoon doing her homework on my desk, and was reading a bit of her textbook aloud to me:\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s hard for me to pronounce the words today because of my palette expander.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 [my heart broke as I heard her read, because I\u00c2\u00a0can tell\u00c2\u00a0she&#8217;s very dyslexic and she really, really could use my help &#8211; how to offer tutoring to her parents for free without hurting their feelings?]<\/p>\n<p>From the seven-and-a-half-year-old regular visitor to the children&#8217;s room, who always comes in without her mom and has long conversations with me:\u00c2\u00a0 (running back towards me as she&#8217;s about to leave &#8211; big hug for me&#8230;) &#8220;You smell good!&#8221; (&#8230;then runs back to the door) &#8220;Bye! Bye!
