Two of the fifth graders who are in the book group attended game hour yesterday, and as we were cleaning up the room at the end of game time, both boys started talking to me about this month\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s book.\u00c2\u00a0 The book is Peter Pan in Scarlet<\/em> by Geraldine McCaughrean, the first authorized sequel to the original Peter Pan.\u00c2\u00a0 And the boys are truly puzzled by it.\u00c2\u00a0 John told me that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s totally confused by what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happening: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153First they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re old – then they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re kids – and there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something weird going on with Wendy\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Frank told me that he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s read about a hundred pages, but nothing is making sense to him.\u00c2\u00a0 John suggested that maybe it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really a book for older kids, not fifth graders, and Frank agreed.<\/p>\n

I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t read the book yet (I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m still working on that assignment that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s due on the 19th), so I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t help them with specifics, but I did suggest that they jot down questions that they have as they read the rest of the book, to use as a starting point for our discussion.\u00c2\u00a0 And I also mentioned that some books are confusing, but intentionally so, and that such books often work towards resolution and solution by their conclusion.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been a while since I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve read it, but I seem to remember that McCaughrean\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pack of Lies<\/em> is one such book.
\nIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s too bad that the kids are struggling with Peter Pan in Scarlet<\/em>, but they are all very bright, very literate kids, and hopefully they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be able to tease some sense out of this confusing text.\u00c2\u00a0 If not, at least we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll have LOTS to discuss at the next meeting, on the 27th.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
