{"id":346,"date":"2009-03-23T20:48:03","date_gmt":"2009-03-24T00:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=346"},"modified":"2018-12-09T13:28:51","modified_gmt":"2018-12-09T17:28:51","slug":"one-more-time-for-spot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/one-more-time-for-spot\/","title":{"rendered":"One more time for Spot&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I used my felt pieces for <em>Where&#8217;s Spot <\/em>again last Thursday, this time for a preschool storytime (ages four to seven).\u00a0 I did it partly as an experiment &#8211; comparing the reactions of the toddler age group to this age group &#8211; and partly because I had a feeling it would be lots of fun.<\/p>\n<p>It was a BLAST!\u00a0 By age four, most kids know this story inside out, and when I brought out a new piece &#8211; the grandfather clock, for instance &#8211; the kids would start yelling &#8220;There&#8217;s a snake in there!!!!&#8221; And I would play the dumb adult, saying, &#8220;Gee, are you sure?\u00a0 You really think there&#8217;s a snake in the clock?\u00a0 Don&#8217;t you think Spot is in the clock?&#8221;\u00a0 And the kids would holler back in unison, &#8220;NOOOO!!!!\u00a0 It&#8217;s a SNAKE!!!!&#8221;\u00a0 And I&#8217;d open the the door of the clock and find the snake, and shake my head while saying, &#8220;Wow, you guys were right.\u00a0 There IS a snake in there.\u00a0 No Spot, but a snake&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And then we&#8217;d continue on to the next felt piece, and repeat the process.\u00a0 The kids had a fantastic time hollering their thoughts to me (which, surprisingly, never once felt out of control, because I was able to moderate their comments and behavior through the whole story), and I had a great time pretending to be the not-so-bright librarian who had no clue what animal was in each of the felt pieces.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was so much fun that I&#8217;m going to extend the experiment tomorrow morning, and try using these felt pieces with the infant storytime crowd.\u00a0 Lots of babies, some one year olds, a few twos or almost twos.\u00a0 It will be very, very interesting to observe this crowd and how they react to the story.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly for my own storytelling, though, last Thursday was a prime example of how the best storytimes are interactive, with the storyteller paying close attention to the reactions of the kids in the audience.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re willing and able to &#8220;riff&#8221; a little when telling stories, it becomes the most incredible experience for everyone, storyteller AND audience.\u00a0 I left last Thursday&#8217;s storytime smiling and with a totally happy storytime buzz that lasted me the rest of the day.\u00a0 Hopefully tomorrow&#8217;s telling of <em>Where&#8217;s Spot <\/em>will be just as wonderful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I used my felt pieces for Where&#8217;s Spot again last Thursday, this time for a preschool storytime (ages four to seven).\u00a0 I did it partly as an experiment &#8211; comparing the reactions of the toddler age group to this age group &#8211; and partly because I had a feeling it would be lots of &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/one-more-time-for-spot\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">One more time for Spot&#8230;<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25,23],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-346","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-feltboard","category-storytime"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=346"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1766,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/346\/revisions\/1766"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=346"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=346"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=346"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
