{"id":158,"date":"2007-12-27T07:37:31","date_gmt":"2007-12-27T11:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=158"},"modified":"2008-05-01T10:08:45","modified_gmt":"2008-05-01T14:08:45","slug":"aaaaah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/aaaaah\/","title":{"rendered":"Aaaaah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s nothing like a vacation, even a vacation that&#8217;s only four days long.\u00c2\u00a0 In amongst many wonderful visits with family, Jim and I were good and lazy over the long weekend, reading (both of us) and playing guitar (Jim) and watching a corny movie (<em>Knocked Up<\/em>) and even cleaning the house (the cats thanked us for that).<\/p>\n<p>With no book group meetings in the next two weeks, I chose a couple of books that I wanted to read, rather than had to read (even though I do have ultimate choosing authority over\u00c2\u00a0those book group books, there&#8217;s still a sense of them being an assignment &#8211; weird how that works).\u00c2\u00a0 First up was <em>Starcross <\/em>by Philip Reeve, the sequel to one of my favorite books of last year, <em>Larklight<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Surprisingly, I didn&#8217;t like <em>Starcross <\/em>nearly as well as I did the first book.\u00c2\u00a0 This puzzled me, since I&#8217;ve been looking forward to\u00c2\u00a0it, and I&#8217;m wondering whether one problem was simply my mood when I read the book.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s too simple an explanation.\u00c2\u00a0 The trouble with <em>Starcross<\/em>, in my opinion, is that it&#8217;s just <em>Larklight<\/em>, Round Two; where <em>Larklight <\/em>was innovative and fresh, <em>Starcross <\/em>is just a repeat with a slightly different plot line.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really know what Reeve could have done to make the sequel as interesting as the first book, since the charm of <em>Larklight <\/em>lies in its unusual conceit of Victorian-era England having dominion over most of space due to the discovery of chemical wedding that propels spacecraft in the nineteenth century.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And I wonder whether <em>Starcross <\/em>will find an audience at my library.\u00c2\u00a0 When I enthusiastically presented <em>Larklight <\/em>to one of my book groups last spring, they absolutely hated it.\u00c2\u00a0 Hated it.\u00c2\u00a0 I loved it, the kids despised it.\u00c2\u00a0 If they despised the original model, chances are they won&#8217;t even bother taking the newly published sequel out of the library.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to keep tabs on the circulation numbers for this pair of books, and see how often they get checked out.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow I&#8217;ll write about the other book I read over the weekend, <em>Duchessina <\/em>by Carolyn Meyer, a piece of historical fiction about Catherine de&#8217; Medici.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s nothing like a vacation, even a vacation that&#8217;s only four days long.\u00c2\u00a0 In amongst many wonderful visits with family, Jim and I were good and lazy over the long weekend, reading (both of us) and playing guitar (Jim) and watching a corny movie (Knocked Up) and even cleaning the house (the cats thanked us &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/aaaaah\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Aaaaah<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6,17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-158","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-childrens-book-reviews","category-spare-time"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/158","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=158"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/158\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=158"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=158"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=158"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
