{"id":107,"date":"2007-01-30T10:55:17","date_gmt":"2007-01-30T14:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/?p=107"},"modified":"2007-01-30T10:55:17","modified_gmt":"2007-01-30T14:55:17","slug":"book-group-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/book-group-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Book group update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Tuesday was the 4th grade Bagels n\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Books group, today was the 5th grade book group.\u00c2\u00a0 Our book was <em>Gregor the Overlander<\/em> by Suzanne Collins, a book which I thoroughly enjoyed, despite the giant cockroaches and rats and bats.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the last time that the two groups will have read the same book, so the last time that I can compare them head-to-head, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really fascinating to note the differences.<\/p>\n<p>The 4th grade group has dwindled a bit in size from its overwhelming high of eleven participants, one of the unfortunate effects of being a library program, but we still have a good core group.\u00c2\u00a0 All great kids, all kids who I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve gotten to know from their visits to the library on non-book group days, but somehow the group still isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t quite gelling.\u00c2\u00a0 We try, but I have to constantly remind them about \u00e2\u20ac\u0153book group etiquette,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d such as not interrupting each other, valuing each other\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments, and staying on topic.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the fifth grade group, which has grown a bit in size over the months, has gelled quite nicely.\u00c2\u00a0 Like the fourth graders, the fifth graders are all great kids as individuals, but they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve also reached the next level in their development and in their group dynamic.\u00c2\u00a0 At the start of today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s discussion, one of the kids said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Can we be sure we raise our hands, and not interrupt each other?\u00c2\u00a0 I think it would be nice if we made sure we stayed on topic, too, so that we can really discuss the book and not be rude.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 And they were fabulous.\u00c2\u00a0 I was the adult in the room, but I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to prompt book discussion: these kids had really thought about the book and had excellent comments about it.\u00c2\u00a0 They had a great dialogue, without much help from me, and I enjoyed hearing their insights.\u00c2\u00a0 What a pleasure!<\/p>\n<p>And do read the book, if you haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t.\u00c2\u00a0 Good, original fantasy is hard to come by!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Tuesday was the 4th grade Bagels n\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Books group, today was the 5th grade book group.\u00c2\u00a0 Our book was Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins, a book which I thoroughly enjoyed, despite the giant cockroaches and rats and bats.\u00c2\u00a0 This is the last time that the two groups will have read the same book, &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/book-group-update\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Book group update<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-107","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-groups","category-childrens-book-reviews"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=107"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/107\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=107"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=107"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/abbykingsbury.org\/books\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=107"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
