I think the thing with teaching -- and what you do is teaching, in a very real sense -- is that the results are usually not immediate. Students, library patrons, story hour attenders all accumulate experiences and wisdom and knowledge from your work. They won't see results right away, and neither will you. It can make the work frustrating sometimes (I know it does me), but you know -- as Fran said -- when a child lights up with enthusiasm for a book, or keeps coming back to the library, or visits after "growing up" and moving away.

You are a really great children's librarian -- maybe keep a journal of those moments when you do see results. Hmm. Maybe I'll do the same for my teaching.

When my Mom used to take us to the library every week, the children's librarian was so friendly, interested and excited about what I was reading. 20 years later she is still working at the library and she remembers me... and I still love going to the library. She made a positive impact on me, and I never had library book clubs or any of the interesting activities that you do. Maybe the impact isn't as dramatic as it has been with the dyslexic student you worked with, but it's there, and it lasts. An awesome children's librarian is very important!

Liz - ah, there are *always* those health issues lately...and you're too kind. The older I get, the less "knowledgeable, creative, and inspiring" I feel!
Jean - Horses might actually be a hard theme for this age group - I'll have to investigate whether there are enough books available...
Carol - There's nothing odd about large collections of puppets. Just take a look in my attic and in my office at work. [And the photo link doesn't seem to work :( ]

I think a theme of "Horses" must be on the horizon. I'll come read a chapter from "Horses and Divorces" (it's kid friendly... probably for your middle school group...). I bet they would like it.

But "Spring" is even better...

Welcome back! I missed you! I'm glad to read that you were MIA from the blog for creative purposes and not health reasons. Looking forward to seeing some pictures of all your theme work! Once again, your community is so fortunate to have someone as knowledgeable, creative, and inspiring as you are for their children's libarian!
